When you learn about the human body in high school biology, your teacher probably told you about organs, bones, muscles, and cells. Few teachers teach their students about fascia. That’s a shame, because fascia may be the reason that you’re feeling chronic pain and why your body just feels completely out of alignment.
What Is Fascia?
Fascia is a thin layer of fibrous tissue that hugs your muscles and organs. If you’ve ever pulled skin off an uncooked chicken breast, (sorry for the slightly icky visual), you might have noticed a thin, clear sheath around the muscle. That’s fascia.
Over time, as your body collects small traumas, that fascia thickens and hardens. It can even actually adhere to your muscles. This happens to almost everyone – it’s just a consequence of modern life. This is a big problem, because when the fascia tightens around your muscles and adheres to it, the fascia can actually pull your muscles out of alignment. The next stop on this unhappy train ride is Pain Station followed by Injury Junction and Pain Meds Crossing.
Breaking the Bond
Have you noticed that after a massage you feel great…but that eventually the pain comes back again? There’s a reason for that.
Imagine that I wrapped your entire arm tightly in saran wrap. It’s pretty uncomfortable, especially when you try to move your arm up and down or bend your elbow. Your muscles just can’t expand. Your arm is stiff and awkward. That’s basically how your body feels when you have tight fascia. If a masseuse massaged your arm, it wouldn’t affect the saran wrap, would it? You’d have the same problem. That’s because massage focuses on loosening your muscles, not the fascia.
That’s the difference between Rolf Structural Integration and massage. Our entire Rolf Structural Integration practice centers on manipulating your fascia to loosen it and break adhesions. Imagine how much better you would feel if someone loosened the saran wrap on your arm so that you could bend your elbow and move your arm without any restriction at all?
That’s Rolf Structural Integration in a nutshell. When we break the adhesions and loosen thick, tight segments of the fascia, your muscle can finally move better. You’ll enjoy a much better range of motion. Best of all, your muscles can actually settle back into their natural alignment and stop pulling your body out of alignment.
This helps to permanently eliminate the pain you feel from years or decades of poor posture.
What Rolf Structural Integration Can Do For You
At my practice, I have watched my clients leave my office feeling like new people after a single visit. It’s also improved the performance of my athletic clients, whether they’re professional athletes or passionate weekend warriors. Even teens can benefit from Rolf Structural Integration. They’ve been sitting for hours a day in classrooms for years, so the process of tightening fascia (especially in the shoulders and hip flexors) has already begun.
